Description
Certificate for two shares of the Penobscot Fox Corporation issued to Margaret A. Miles. The Penobscot Fox Corporation was established in early 1926 to salvage the investments by Old Town investors in the Gordon Black Fox Farm that was run by Dr. Frank Gordon of Bangor. In late 1925, this company went bankrupt and there was the danger that because there was no money left, the foxes could not be fed until the next pelting season and therefore any investment in the company would be a total loss. By raising money to feed the foxes until the next pelting season, potentially losses could be covered and perhaps even some money could be made. The effort was headed Frank W. Phelps and Arthur J. Bradbury, both ex-majors of the City. It is not clear whether the Old Town investors recouped their losses or even made a profit. Margaret A. Miles appears to have been the long term "operator" at the Old Town Maine Central railway station by some accounts in the Old Town Enterprise and the "ticket lady" by some others.~root~>
